Humidity test evaluates the impact of moisture on electronic components, particularly those with non-hermetic packaging. This process ensures the reliability of materials used in critical industries such as aerospace, automotive, and telecommunications by simulating humid environments that can accelerate material degradation and affect electrical performance.

Why is humidity testing important?

Exposure to high humidity can significantly reduce the lifespan of electronic components by inducing stress on materials, leading to corrosion, delamination, and electrical failures. By conducting rigorous humidity tests, we help manufacturers filter and select the most reliable components, ensuring long-term performance.

Temperature & Humidity with Bias test (THB)

The Temperature & Humidity with Bias Test (THB) is a standard method used to assess component reliability under extreme moisture and temperature conditions while the devices are under electrical bias. The objective is to evaluate the ability of encapsulants, seals, and interfaces to resist moisture penetration and prevent degradation.

One of the most common THB test conditions is 85/85 – 85°C and 85% relative humidity – with varying test durations based on industry requirements.

Pass/Fail criteria

Once testing is completed, electrical measurements determine whether a component meets reliability standards. A component fails the THB test if:

  • It exceeds the parametric limits defined in the acquisition specification.
  • It no longer functions under nominal conditions.
  • Corrosion or visual defects appear on the tested parts.

Compliance with industry standards

Our humidity testing procedures comply with JEDEC Standard No. 22-A101C, which prescribes a test duration of 1000 hours. In some cases, per ECSS-Q-ST-60-13C standards for commercial electronic components in space applications, Highly Accelerated Stress Testing (HAST) can be performed instead, reducing the test duration to 96 hours.
