Electrical Testing is a critical process in evaluating the performance, reliability, and safety of electronic components and systems. It encompasses various tests designed to assess different aspects of electrical behavior, ensuring that devices meet specified standards and function as intended in their operational environments.

Advanced techniques in Electrical Testing

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Testing

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Testing evaluates a device’s resilience to electrostatic discharges, which can cause immediate or latent failures in electronic components. According to Alter Technology, their laboratory is accredited to perform ESD tests up to 16.5 kV, following the EN 61000-4-2 standard. This testing assesses the Equipment Under Test (EUT)’s ability to operate as intended when subjected to electrostatic discharges in both contact and air-discharge modes.

Electrical Characterization

Electrical characterization involves measuring and analyzing the electrical properties of components, such as resistors, capacitors, and inductors, under various conditions. Alter Technology offers comprehensive testing services for both passive and active devices, including:

  • High-Power Device Testing: Capabilities include dielectric withstanding voltage tests up to 12 kV and characterization of LCR devices up to 3 GHz.
  • Active Device Testing: Services range from discrete components like diodes and transistors to Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) devices. Equipment includes semiconductor curve tracers, analyzers, and mixed-signal Automated Test Equipment (ATE) such as the Teradyne UltraFLEX. Testing can be conducted across extreme temperatures, from -80ºC to +200ºC.
  • Specialized Measurements: This includes small bias current measurements in the femtoampere range, high-speed and precision converter assessments (A/D & D/A up to 24 bits), and testing of devices with over 1000 I/O digital interfaces.
  • RF/Microwave Device Characterization: Services encompass power characterization, screening, life testing, and the design and manufacturing of test fixtures and calibration kits for high-frequency devices.

These electrical testing services are essential for verifying that electronic components meet their design specifications and can withstand the electrical stresses encountered during operation. By conducting thorough electrical testing, manufacturers and engineers can ensure the reliability and safety of electronic systems across various applications.

Importance of Electrical Testing

Electrical testing helps manufacturers and engineers:

  • Ensure product quality and reliability.
  • Minimize the risk of field failures.
  • Optimize designs for energy efficiency.
  • Reduce production costs by detecting issues early in the development cycle.

Through comprehensive testing protocols, electrical testing safeguards the integrity and performance of electronic systems in today’s technology-driven world.
