Prototyping is a very important phase during the design process. It consists of building one or several samples of the design we have just finished.

The prototypes are used by the Design engineers to prove and test the functions and components calculated and designed during the design process. It is where the concept goes from theory to reality.

The engineer will be able to measure and adjust the functionality of the design if needed.

For low complexity design prototypes, you may not need a complete assembly process but just a good technician with good soldering skills plus very nice and clear instructions to assemble the Bill of Material components on the PCB.

Why is prototyping important?

Prototyping serves several vital functions in the design process:

  • Validation: Ensures the design meets performance specifications.
  • Testing: Identifies any potential flaws in components or functionality.
  • Optimization: Allows engineers to refine and adjust the design before full-scale production.

For simpler designs, prototypes may not require a full assembly process. Often, a skilled technician with precise soldering abilities and clear assembly instructions can assemble the Bill of Materials (BOM) components on the PCB.

For more complex designs, specialized services and equipment are essential to ensure the prototype’s quality and reliability.

PCB Prototyping

Low-complexity designs

For straightforward designs, PCB prototyping can often be done in-house or using a basic PCB prototyping service. Costs in these cases are largely dependent on:

  • The complexity of the PCB technology.
  • The required turnaround time (faster delivery generally incurs higher costs).

Mid-to-high complexity designs

For more advanced prototypes, we recommend working with specialized electronics assembly suppliers. These providers ensure:

  • High-quality assembly to prevent issues related to soldering or component placement.
  • A clear focus on debugging design issues rather than troubleshooting assembly problems.

ALTER’s Prototyping services

At ALTER, we prioritize quality and timely delivery to support your design validation process effectively.

In-House prototyping capabilities

Our in-house prototyping line handles low-complexity designs with a small pick-and-place machine, SMD reflow ovens, and advanced soldering equipment.

Electronics manufacturing services

For mid-to-high complexity designs, we collaborate with trusted Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) suppliers. These partnerships enable us to deliver high-quality prototypes quickly and efficiently.

End-to-End component sourcing

Our dedicated purchasing team sources all required components for assembly, ensuring a seamless prototyping process.

State-of-the-art testing equipment

To validate your prototype’s performance, we utilize a full suite of advanced instrumentation to measure critical variables and confirm the design meets its specifications.
